Publiés respectivement en 1750 et 1754, les deux Discours répondent à des questions posées par l'académie de Dijon. Le premier -le Discours sur les sciences et les arts -eut un retentissement considérable et valut une immédiate notoriété à Rousseau. Le second, quant à lui -le Discours sur l'inégalité -, s'est imposé ccmme l'un des grands traités de la philosophie politique moderne, suscitant d'innombrables ccmmentaires. Dans des pages désormais classiques, Rousseau jette en philosophe les bases de sa doctrine, notamment l'idée fameuse que tous les maux et inégalités entre les hommes relèvent d'une seule et même cause: la vie en société.
