A la fin du XIXème siècle, un jeune juif arrivé d'Europe de l'est à Manchester se promenait dans la rue en vendant toutes sortes d'articles dans une caisse accrochée autour du cou. Comme il ne parlait pas un mot d'anglais, une petite pancarte était épinglée à la caisse : "Ne demandez pas le prix, tout est à 1 penny". En quelques décennies, ce jeune garçon qui s'appelait Marks allait fonder la chaîne des magasins Marks & Spencer sur le principe qu'énonçait cette pancarte : "Tout est à 1 penny". En s'inspirant de cette anecdote, Anthony Blond a retracé la saga d'une famille semblable à celle des Marks dont il est lui-même issu. Il décrit le processus d'intégration d'une famille juive autour du patriarche Ezra, dans l'Angleterre riche et patricienne à laquelle elle s'identifie totalement.
