Synopsis
C'était l'été où Coltrane est mort, l'été de l'amour et des émeutes, l'été où une rencontre fortuite à Brooklyn a guidé deux jeunes gens sur la voie de l'art, de la ténacité et de l'apprentissage. Patti Smith deviendrait poète et performeuse, et Robert Mapplethorpe, au style très provocateur, se dirigerait vers la photographie. Liés par une même innocence et un même enthousiasme, ils traversent la ville de Brooklyn à Coney Island, de la 42e Rue à la célèbre table ronde du Max's Kansas City, où siège la cour d'Andy Warhol. En 1969, le couple élit domicile au Chelsea Hotel et intègre bientôt une communauté de vedettes et d'inconnues, artistes influents de l'époque et marginaux hauts en couleur. C'est une époque d'intense lucidité, les univers de la poésie, du rock and roll, de l'art et du sexe explosent et s'entrechoquent.
Immergés dans ce milieu, deux gamins font le pacte de toujours prendre soin l'un de l'autre. Romantiques, engagés dans leur pratique artistique, nourris de rêves et d'ambitions, ils se soutiennenet et se donnent confiance pendant les années de vache maigre.
Just Kids commence comme une histoire d'amour et finit comme une élégie, brossant un inoubliable instantané du New York des années 60-70, de ses riches et de ses pauvres, de ses paumés et de ses provocateurs. Véritable conte, il retrace l'ascension de deux jeunes artistes, tel un prélude à leur réussite.
