Burnett (1899-1982) a ouvert une brèche dans le monde du polar et imaginé un genre nouveau:le roman de gangsters. Il renverse la perspective, ses romans noirs plongent dans l'underworld - la pègre à l'âge de la Prohibition, la corruption qui gangrène toutes les strates de la société au grand jour - et font des criminels professionnels leurs personnages principaux. Servies par des intrigues élaborées, un style concis, un sens inné du dialogue, ses histoires livrent une fresque historique et sociale des États-Unis. Burnett y a inventé une subjectivité - criminel, le malfrat n'en est pas moins un être humain en proie à des doutes, des rêves et des cauchemars - et offert "une image du monde vu par les yeux d'un gangster". En proposant pour la première fois en français des traductions intégrales et révisées, cette édition invite, à travers une trilogie - The Asphalt Jungle (1949), Little Men, Big World (1951) et Vanity Row (1952) - augmentée d'Underdog (1957) et de The Cool Man (1968), à plonger dans l'univers du Milieu et du syndicat, où les mitraillettes ont fait place à la corruption, à la menace et au chantage. Scénariste réputé de Hollywood, Burnett est avant tout un écrivain. Inédits, des extraits de son Journal et le témoignage de son fils révèlent un homme érudit qui constelle son oeuvre de références aux classiques (de Virgile à Casanova, de Byron à Fitzgerald, de Balzac à Anatole France). Si la postérité ne semble retenir que le versant hollywoodien de son oeuvre, William R.
