"Metz 1844 - Paris 1896, " poete francais. D'abord "poete-fonctionnaire," il supporte mal son mariage et s'adonne a l'absinthe, ecrivant des poemes ou se melent melancolie et desirs ("Poemes saturniens, " 1866; "Fetes galantes, " 1869). Apres un repit (la "Bonne Chanson, " 1870), il rencontre Rimbaud, qui le fascine et bouleverse sa vie jusqu'a le conduire en prison (1873). Il aspire alors a une poesie musicale ("Romance sans paroles, " 1874) et revient au catholicisme ("Sagesse, " 1881). Promu initiateur du symbolisme, contribuant a faire connaitre "les Poetes maudits" (1884), il mene une vie errante d'hopitaux en cafes ("Jadis et Naguere, " 1884; "Parallelement, " 1889). Il a laisse une poesie tantot nostalgique et crepusculaire, tantot vive et libre, animee par le ton parle et l'imprevu des rythmes impairs.
