Brutus the Buckeye was born on the lawn of the Pi Beta Phi house on a crisp autumn day in 1965. Brutus’s creators (his ‘parents,’) Ray Bourhis and Sally (Huber) Lanyon, felt that Ohio State needed a mascot since the school had gone mascot-less for almost one hundred years. Their fellow students were ready for Brutus (a buckeye nut) who became an instant success after he was revealed at a home football game. This is the story of his evolution from being a gigantic, papier-mâché head, to what he is today—a much smaller, fabric version of his many former selves.
