This is the story of two families—Anders and Gudrun Svendsbye and Thor and Gjertru Birkelo—for whom the promise of America miscarried. About the Author:

Lloyd Svendsbye graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, and went on to teach there. Then he became editor-in-chief at Augsburg Publishing House, and sbesequently the dean of the faculty at St. Olaf College, president of Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, and president of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
