Irene Beckman is 56 years old. She is a lawyer - married, economically well off, with two grown children. One day, as she is listening to her answering machine, she realises that her husband is having a relationship with another woman. She has had suspicions for some time and the idea does not particularly bother her. Her marriage has been pro forma for many years ('once in a while, he made the effort to seduce her') and she has had an affair herself, many years ago. However, at a dinner party, when her husband, having said nothing to her, suddenly tells her and all their guests, that he has found another and intends to leave her, she is forced to face the fact that this phase of her life is over and, from that point, it will be taking a new turn.
