In producing this stunning visual portrait of wildlife in Africa, Gerald Hoberman has travelled to some of the continent s remotest wilderness regions to capture the magnificence and diversity of its animal kingdom. He has crossed the vast African plains to record the wonder of its bounteous wildlife, from the fearsome lion, whose bloodcurdling roar is one of the continent s most evocative sounds, to the elephant, a mighty beast whom some regard as the real king of the wild. His adventures have brought him face to face with the rest of Africa s big five : the African (Cape) buffalo whose reputation for ferocity and persistence has inspired hunting legends for centuries; the white rhinoceros, a gargantuan animal, saved from extinction; and the graceful leopard, a shy, elusive cat of immense strength, which wanders and hunts alone. This collection embraces the lesser-known creatures too. The stately gemsbok, the lively suricate, the long-limbed serval and the elegant kudu are all represented here. Gerald Hoberman s photographs not only capture the splendour of the animals, they also provide a rare insight into their intimate moments and specific behaviours. One can almost hear the haunting cry of the fish eagle, the snarl of a leopard and the gnashing sound of blue wildebeest locking horns. With this collection of breathtaking photographs, Gerald Hoberman pays homage to the truly wild, while simultaneously reminding us all of our custodianship of the earth and the urgency to preserve its creatures.

About the Author:
Master photographer and publisher Gerald Hoberman is renowned for the remarkable impact and quality of his images. Hoberman, described as 'Africa's Crocodile Dundee', has survived being charged by a lion and crashing into the sea in a helicopter, and has once briefly disappeared up to his neck in quicksand. From dramatic desert landscapes photographed from helicopters, hot-air balloons and light aircraft to life amongst remote Indian tribes in the Amazon jungle, from the vast Antarctic ice floes in all their splendour to lions, polar bears and tigers photographed in their natural habitat, this London-trained Capetonian has seen and done it all. Hoberman's particular passion for African wildlife, combined with an incisive eye for detail and fresh perspectives and a hair-trigger response, are all part of his considerable expertise.
