The author asks questions like 'How do you measure a pool of blood?' Echo of Bells is intriguing, stuffed with suspense and dripping with detective devilry. The comparative wilderness of the Malvern Hills make the perfect location for a story where security is an illusion and danger is much closer than the characters think.

Jill Todd was born in Hampshire. For most of her childhood she lived in a village house near Southampton, sharing the large garden with siblings and visiting cousins; which perhaps sparked the idea for ‘Echo of Bells’. Unlike the young people in the novel, however, these children were luckily compatible and have happy memories of their time together – and the villains and ghosts who inhabited their games were entirely imaginary. For as long as she can remember, Jill has been fascinated by tales that exist around the shores of Britain, of coastal lands engulfed by the sea. The Welsh legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod seemed especially evocative; its people are said to have drowned in some cataclysm before recorded history, and its church bells might still be heard on quiet evenings. This tale became the starting point for ‘Echo’, and grew into the contemporary story of a young woman, whose life is changed by the fate of a generation swept away by tragedy and by the sea. Jill now lives in Andover with her husband and son, and is a member of the admin team at a local secondary school. Several of her relatives live in the Malverns and she therefore visits the area regularly – and the villages’ proximity to the comparative wilderness of the hills made it the perfect location, for a story where security is an illusion and danger is much closer than the characters think.
