David and his ten year old twin sons, Carl and Nick, are captured by the ruthless aliens on a piratical visit to Earth. The aliens, who call themselves the Masters, are giant galactic butterflies who scour the universe in their Space Ark in search of exhibits for their unique collection of life-forms.
David and the twins wake to find themselves in a rank, noisy, dark chamber, full of metal cages, each imprisoning specimens of a weird variety of species. There is no sign of the twins' mother who was with them when they were abducted. They come to realize that they are exhibits in a zoo and they are ridiculed by the zoo's visitors. The children remember their own mocking behaviour when staring at animals in zoos and David also feels pangs of guilt over his own collection of butterflies - both live and in albums.
They are befriended by slender, large-headed creatures in the cage next to theirs. They are space scientists called Trimlons who have studied Earth and its inhabitants and they can speak a variety of languages, including basic English. Together they manage to concoct a desperate escape plan, which they put into operation at the next feeding time.
The Ark's exhibits are fed by its keepers, enormous hairy caterpillars with claws on their raised front legs. The twins manage to trick one of them into their cage before David helps the Trimlons to release all the other creatures from their cages. There is chaos, which spreads over the ship as the freed aliens fight with their armed caterpillar guards. Finally, they are confronted by the majestic, but deadly, acid-squirting Masters and a fierce battle rages. David also discovers a gruesome larder, the Masters' food store, where chrysalis-type cases of drugged victims hang on racks - including his unconscious wife.
At a great cost, the alien alliance is victorious, defeating the Masters and taking control of the ship to return all species to their own worlds. Reaching Earth at last, David vows to get rid of his own butterfly collection as the family never want to see another creature in captivity again - dead or alive!
