Synopsis

As a boy Sigmund Freud dreamed of being an explorer, of discovering new lands and sailing the oceans. As an adult he set out to map a far stranger territory: the human mind. This stunning graphic novel by economist, historian, and psychoanalyst Corrine Maier explores the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most influential thinkers. "Freud" is the perfect introduction to the man's genius, his life, and his struggles with a revolutionary and divisive approach to the mind and its inner workings. Anne Simon spins this unique and captivating story into a seamless whirl of image and text, worthy of the master of psychoanalysis' most extraordinary cases.Corinne Maier was born in 1963 in Geneva. As a writer, economist, historian, and psychoanalyst, she has produced around fifteen nonfiction books on subjects like psychoanalysis, society, history, and humor. Though at first her interests seem diffuse, she tirelessly seeks out the common links between them. Her books are bestsellers in France and have been translated into many languages. Her recent writings have centered on work, family, and the nation. Hailed as a counter-culture heroine by the "New York Times," she proudly embraces her independence from any club, scientific society, or political party and celebrates her absence from anyone's payroll.

Review

Corinne Maier was listed as one of the BBC's Inspirational and Influential Women of 2016

"In recent years, the comic book genre has been applied to a wealth of graphic nonfiction for grownups, ranging from famous biographies to philosophy, but nowhere does the genre shine more exquisitely than in Freud
-- a magnificent biography-as-graphic-novel of the founding father of psychoanalysis"
--Brain Pickings

"Deftly told, Maier and Simon play endlessly with the medium in a very restrained way, allowing the idiosyncrasies of Freud's life to dominate."
--Comic Book Resources

"Freud gets the comic biography treatment in this smart, illustrated book
-- and we've never seen such a cool, um, analysis."
--Bustle

"The books' scripts are breezy and considered, and deliver insight into both thinkers' theories and personal lives without expanding on a personal agenda. Maier weaves an intricate web that is deceptively plain but clearly shows how the protagonists' theories often flowed from personal conflicts in their daily lives. [...] intriguing ideas get the chance to shine and embed themselves in the reader's mind [...] The cheerful and even flirtatious drawings from French illustrator Anne Simon are a perfect match for this breezy but intriguing introduction to these great thinkers. [...] Her skill at layering a comic page with mischievous constructions is unparalleled and is never detrimental to its reading. [...] Simon and Maier have produced an easy accessible biography series in Freud and Marx that is equally informative and playful. I can only hope that there are more books in the works for this series."
--Broken Frontier

Maier's biographies of Marx and Freud, originally published in 2013 in French, accomplish animation, selectivity, and context. [...] an invigorating reading experience [...] Teens will appreciate the irreverent tone and easy-to-read graphic format. They may learn a thing or two along the way about these men and their ground¬breaking accomplishments.

--Jewish Book Council

"In only 56 pages, writer and psychoanalyst Corinne Maier does an amazing job touching on everything from Freud's early days of researching cocaine and hypnosis to his later theories on the phallic symbol, the Oedipus complex, and the meaning of life itself. Complimented by the absurd art of Anne Simon, Freud is a historical graphic novel not to be missed."

--Wink Books

"Obviously any page that involves a giant banner that says "Freud Hates Women!" is going to catch my eye. Add in some naked women cavorting around a giant phallus and you've really got my attention. But that's not why this page is a great piece of storytelling."

--Comics Alliance

"Freud feels like a journey into the functions of the human mind, both visually appealing and a fancy tickle to one's imagination. While not going deeply into the works of Sigmund Freud, this biography earns its worthiness with captivating imagery and an imaginative pace of storytelling. At just under 60 pages, Freud will satisfy readers with a fantastic tale of an important human being."

--Drawn Words

"The book strikes a fine balance between informative storytelling, charming imagery and witty dialogue to the point that even if you find psychoanalysis abhorrent, comic books a waste of time and Freud the greatest charlatan of the twentieth century you'll be hard pushed not to crease your lips in wry amusement. Check it out! Education and entertainment rarely come in the same beautiful package.

--It's Nice That

"Nobrow Press, a London-based publisher that focuses on high quality art books and graphic novels, has just released an English translation of Corrinne Maier and Anne Simon's 2012 French graphic album (as they're called in France) titled simply Freud, which shows just how perfect comics can be for illustrating and explaining a concept like psychoanalysis
