In 1927, at the time of notorious American Prohibition, one movie studio is under attack by moralists at the Hays Office, determined to cleanse the silver screen and do away with indecency, moral turpitude, sin and corruption. But the studio is already in crisis. Its matinee idol will fail his voice test because of his stutter and the bankers are threatening to foreclose. It is left to Gene, the studio tea boy, to save the day by developing the revolutionary new technique of miming to playback. He is quickly hailed as the new boy wonder in the gossip columns and his meteoric career begins, assisted by a very wealthy fairy godmother. But one gossip columnist turns out to be the wicked witch of this plot. There are also sinister Nazis about to take over the studio for dubious propaganda purposes and Gene s sister Peggy-Sue threatens to reveal that he is gay at a time when the Hays Office Production Code classifies this as a sexual perversion . Of course, she is jealous of her brother s success, his gorgeous boyfriend, Jamie, and their first Academy Award. Now she talks of hellfire and the wages of sin...
