The chapters encompass detailed description of a life spent at the outer reaches of the Imperial Russian Empire, both at sea and in the Siberian wilderness. It covers periods of his life exposed to extreme cold and danger, through to his emergence as one of the founding father's of the Port City of Vladivostok and his associations with the family of Tsar Nicholas II and the aristocracy of the foremost nations of the period from 1860-1908. His travels took him seventeen times around the world. Detailed accounts of the Tsar's Coronation and the social and political life of Imperial Russia form part of a fascinating life story culminating in the opening of the largest dry dock in the Far East which he built for the Imperial Russsian Navy.
In addition, his travels to America describe life from the West Coast and across the country by stagecoach and the first railway line to the East Coast. Early chapters cover the Russian Empire extending to what is now the North Western United States.
An extraordinary "echo" of current times is apparent in the way both business and political life was conducted, often in meetings on private yachts or the organised hunting trips that ensued on private islands in the Russian Far East.
Otto Lindholm was multiligual and dictated his life story in English after losing his entire library and photograhs in the first uprisings of 1905 in Vladivostok. Through the help of contacts at the Arseniev Museum in Vladivostok and also Washington State Unniversity, we have assembled photograghs and detail to bring this life story to publication.
