In September 2005, Alex Kapranos began writing about what he ate while touring the world with the rock band Franz Ferdinand. The writing is as much about where he eats and the people he eats with as the unusual flavours he tastes on the road.
Whether it’s munching donuts with cops in Brooklyn, swallowing bull’s balls with the band in Buenos Aires or queuing for a saveloy in South Shields, these are surprising and vivid snapshots of life on the road.
Funny, poignant, sickening or sexual depending on the situation, the material, both new and previously published in the Guardian, is fascinating and entertaining.

`Surprisingly well written ... an impressionistic food autobiography that
intersperses tales of what he ate on tour with memories of his childhood
and all the crappy restaurant jobs he ever had' Independent on Sunday
`Alex Kapranos eats alone, with friends and strangers, in restaurants and
markets, and records the flavour of the food and his surroundings with
lustrous simplicity ... the rapidly changing scenes, the disorientating
leaps from one continent to another; the intense bursts of unfamiliar
sensation, all combine to convey the pleasure of discovering new flavours
in a book that is honest, graceful, vivid and touching' The Times
`Reveals the Franz Ferdinand frontman to be a talented food writer.
Thoughtful prose seems to flow out of him as effortlessly as deep-fried
grasshoppers flow in' Scotsman
`Brilliant' InStyle
`Kapranos reveals not only a deep love of food but a writing talent that
stretches far further than the occasional song lyric. The result might make
you laugh, it might make you jealous. One thing it will certainly make you
is hungry' Arena
`Joyful, delicious foody travelogue ... brings new unexpected delights. A
rare gem of a book' Big Issue
`It's easy to tell from Kapranos's pithy language savouring lyrics that
he's one of those pop stars who, in a parallel universe, might have been a
writer. He has the gift of being enthusiastic about, and interested in
everything, which makes this collection of observations and Proustian
recollections all the more entertaining' Word
`A nifty and nippy little volume of tidbits, including menus, travel guides
and philosophy on the hoof... Kapranos leaks enough personal snippets to
add a dash of warmth to the pop paraphernalia' The Sunday Express
`Details in a sumptuous and graphic style the highs and lows of eating out,
from alligator to sea urchin. Kapranos reinvigorates the phrase "don't
knock it `til you've tried it" ' Easy Living
`It begins with his vomiting crisps, pickled onions, marshmallows and pineapple on to a carpet in 1973 and rambles round the world for 120 pages
to his vomiting a chicken salad in Serbia' Daily Telegraph
`A delight to read. Why Kapranos continues to waste his time performing for
crowds of ecstatic, devoted, nubile fans when he's already found his true
calling is anyone's guess' New York Times Book Review
`Engaging' Spectator
`My stocking filler of the year' Nigel Slater, Observer
Alex Kapranos is the singer and guitarist of Franz Ferdinand. Before the success of the band, he spent over a decade jumping between stints as a chef, wine waiter, kitchen porter, delivery driver, welder, promoter, college lecturer and doley layabout: anything to generate the cash that his bands didn’t.
Andrew Knowles is touring drummer and keyboards player with the band, and a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art
