Review

This is an incredibly useful, well written and well structured book. We are using it in conjunction with our VCOP writing approach and are finding that the units compliment our lesson objectives. The book is well structured - the information for teachers is clear and succinct but informative. Many teachers went to school at a period when teaching these things was out of fashion so their own subject knowledge is weak and the framework objectives aren't always clear to understand. A good example is the lesson on active and passive - something many teachers struggle with! The lesson is broken down clearly and can easily be delivered to a mixed ability class working in differentiated groups. I like the fact that the teacher group is clearly identified and that the independent tasks have value and merit (many resources for such groups are merely 'fillers' so the teacher can work without interruption - these are not. Activities are broken into support and extension work - again this is often not the case in other resources being supplied in schools. Also, other ideas such as word walls and displays are included which enhance the learning environment and provide great ideas for those schools, such as ours, who are using a 'working walls' approach to develop pupils learning. I will be recommending to our Literacy Team that we purchase books for other year groups. About the Author

Eileen Jones began teaching in 1976. In the early years of her teaching career, she worked in primary schools, teaching children between 8 and 11. Later she specialised in teaching English and French to children aged 11 and over. During the latter half of her time as a teacher, her focus shifted again to younger pupils. In 2000, Eileen retired from front-line teaching to begin a new career that united her two great passions and skill sets...teaching language and teaching primary school children. As the prolific writer of books, articles, plays, and teaching resources, Eileen has now become one of the UK s most progressive thinkers and practitioners in the areas of primary and language education.
