Synopsis

Liber Noctis is a practical and experiential handbook of the sorcerous arte by English alchemist and sorceror Gary Nottingham. It explores the attitudes, training and preparation required for success in ritual, and as the title suggests, does not shy away from the 'darker' aspects of magic.

Essential components of successful ritual such as the construction and empowering of magical tools, the hallowing of the compass points, protection, ritual timing and use of divination are all covered in depth, along with the use of plants through elemental condensers and the creation of magical servants. The benefits of planetary energies, and their use in sigils, together with the fixed stars and Psalms, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and the Middle Pillar, as well as an introduction to the use of Geomancy all add to the wide spectrum of material integrated into this manual of practice.

The use of curses, binding, summoning the dead and spirits of the deep are often perceived as being negative, but are elucidated by the author without judgement to demonstrate the arsenal of practices available to the modern sorceror and magical practitioner. Both necromancy and the evocation of Goetic spirits are considered, with examples of the author's own experiences of these artes. This comprehensive book provides an excellent introduction to the essentials of ritual magic.

This book is Volume I of the Foundations of Practical Sorcery, a 7-volume series by Gary St. Michael Nottingham.

Review

A genuine one stop book for those who want to do REAL magick ... This is a book I have no hesitation recommending, it is a one stop shop for getting to the nitty gritty of working magic. So many books are written by people who have dabbled but never consolidated their magical practice, this book is written by a man who has done it all, and over decades of practice and he is self effacing about his achievements.
My great joy is that it now available on Kindle. This is a book I refer to every week, the original has been by my bedside for ten years and I have successfully carried out many of the arts within it.
There is a great sense of mischief and good humour in amongst the pages and many who have been down the western magical tradition will recognise the in jokes ...a great book and my life has been greatly enriched by time spent in the author's company. 5.0 out of 5 stars - Magic Sam, Amazon reviewer

Quickly become a companion close to hand. The author is so very knowledgeable that he has had me reaching for a dictionary more than once and researching references and imagery, with his book in hand. Of course, he has also left me with several tasks and solved more than one situation for me, since it's the kind of book which calls to be tried out. I look forward to acquiring its companions. - Andrea Meryem Angelos, Amazon reviewer

About the Author

Gary St. M. Nottingham first came across alchemy when he was fifteen through reading the popular early 1970's occult magazine 'Man, Myth & Magic.' This encouraged him to find out further about the arte and to study Israel Regardie's 'The Philosopher's Stone'; this in turn led to the works of Hollandus, Paracelsus and eventually Junius. However, it was his involvement with a group of alchemical practitioners that opened many of the doors for him and much that he had learnt finally began to make sense. Subsequently he has taught and written extensively on the alchemical arte, running several one-day workshops and weekends on practical laboratory alchemy. His other areas of occult study are astrology, grimoires, and the Kabbalah, all of which are expressed as part of his alchemical work.
