Gentlemen of Bacongo provides a fascinating insight to the vibrant street style of the 'Sapeurs', the elegant and immaculately dressed dandies from the heart of the Congo.
The Sapeurs today belong to 'La SAPE' (Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes) - one of the world's most exclusive clubs. Members have their own code of honour, codes of professional conduct and strict notions of morality. It is a world within a world within a city.
Designer brands of suits and accessories are important to sapeurs, and they work hard to save as much money as they can to dedicate to the most beautiful suits and accessories they can find. But their amazing style is also based on strict rules of elegance, beauty and harmony of colours. They dress to impress, whilst also being ambassadors of etiquette, peace and music, as well as the essence of style. The result is a unique and inspiring style, that has captured the imagination of people all over the world - the sapeurs are now truly the kings of elegance.
Introduction written by Paul Smith, one of the world's most renowned and influential menswear designers. The cover image was also chosen for Paul Smith's London Fashion Week show invitation for September 09.

Daniele Tamagni trained originally as an art historian, and as a photographer captured the unique street style in burgeoning African urban spaces, such as Brazzaville, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Dakar, where he sought and found individualistic identity. In 2007, he won the Canon Young Photographer Award with a project about the Congolese dandies, Sapeurs of Brazzaville, and in 2010, the International Center of Photography Infinity Award, fashion category. In 2011, he won the World Press Photo, Arts & Humanity category for his project on the Cholitas Luchadores, female wrestlers of Bolivia. Tamagni produced several successful photography books including the iconic Gentlemen of Bacongo, 2009 in which designer Paul Smith wrote the preface and found inspiration for his 2010 spring/summer collection, and Fashion Tribes in 2014, with Afro-American actress and social activist Rosario Dawson. He has been exhibited worldwide, with works in private and major public collections including Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, USA; Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), Chicago, USA; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA; and Brighton Museum, Brighton, UK. He died in 2017 and his legacy supporting young photographers in Africa, is continued by the Daniele Tamagni Foundation.

Seller: Sell Books, Elland, YORKS, United Kingdom
hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
