If ever help is needed, for any reason, everyone aboard must know what to do.
1. Use Channel 16 and high power
2. Press the button on the microphone to speak – then release it after speaking.
If it is a real emergency – call
MAYDAY– MAYDAY – MAYDAY
3. When someone answers, tell them:
WHO you are – Your yacht′s name.
WHERE you are – You position. You should have some idea, and the GPS will show your latitude and longitude.
WHAT the problem is – eg. ′sinking′, ′crew injured′, or ′man overboard′.
Help wi8ll come quickest if you can tell the shore operator slowly and clearly al they need to know, and can answer their questions. So try to be calm – which is not always easy.
USING A MOBILE PHONE O GET HELP
If all else fails, a mobile phone might be used to get help. But remember – with a mobile phone the only person who knows your problem is the one you call. when using a radio, everyone, including any nearby vessels, can hear you and may be able to help.
