This workbook has been written to support all those working within the Foundation Stage. It is structured around a flexible needs assessment process so trainees can begin their learning at a level appropriate to their experience. Undergraduates following early childhood studies degrees or early years foundation degrees will also find it a useful resource as will practitioners already working in the Foundation Stage.

Review:
This is a good basic text for introducing students to Foundation Stage teaching and pedagogical concerns. -- ESCalate website
From the Author:
This book has been designed to support all practitioners working in the Foundation Stage. It has been written with clear entry points so that trainee teachers who wish to work in the Foundation Stage, undergraduates following early childhood studies degrees, early years foundation degrees and practitioners already working within the foundation stage will be able to use the book to support their developing practice.

The book is based upon the principles set out in the curriculum guidance for the foundation stage (QCA,2000) and addresses six generic themes which taken to together encompass the breadth of early years work. The themes are:

* young children as learners and enquirers;
* making connections in children’s learning;
* adults and children working together;
* organising the environment for learning;
* planning for learning;
* observing and assessing young children.

The authors deliberated carefully in their choice of themes and the aspects to cover within each theme drawing upon their extensive knowledge and work with children and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds. The authors are passionate and excited regarding early years practice and each author selected their theme to write about which would maximise their passion and enthusiasm so that this could be shared with the readers of the book.

At the beginning of the book there is a needs analysis whereby practitioners can assess their own entry point for each theme. They can then address each theme at their own level. The book provides practitioners with theory and practical activities which they can complete in their own setting or a setting which is familiar to them. This enables them to combine theory and practice and reflect deeply about their work.

This book is now being used extensively with PGCE early years students who find the underpinning themes thought provoking and the activities useful in developing their understanding of early years practice. It is also being used with practitioners in a variety of settings: nursery classes, reception classes and pre-schools to help them develop their practice and subsequently their work with young children. As one practitioner stated "everyone should read this book and use it to develop their practice".
