Italian restauranteurs voted Sassicaia "wine of the 20th century" over the elite of Barlo, Barbaresco and Brunello di Montalcino. Yet the story of the meteroic rise to supremacy of a wine from a grape variety new to Tuscany, grown in a place previously considered unsuitable for quality wines is nothing short of astounding. Sassicaia began to make an impact outside Italy in the early 1970s culminating in 1978 when it triumphed in a "Decanter" magazine blind tasting of Cabernets from around the world, surprising judges who took it for a cru classe Bordeaux. About the Author:
Etienne Hunyady, born in Lausanne in 1968, spent his childhood in Italy but went to college in the USA to study literature and art. He began working over twenty years ago in New York. He has lived in Tuscany since 1998, where he photographs interiors, landscapes, and portraits for magazines, hotels, and wine producers. His work has appeared in magazines in Europe and the USA, and he has published three books, one of them with teNeues: Luxury Houses Toscana. Marco Fini, who was born in Florence in 1934, is a journalist who has worked with Italian weeklies Panorama and Epoca. He has been active since the 1960s and has co-written TV programs including La Forza della Democrazia and L'Italia del boom for RAI 2 with Corrado Stajano. He presently splits his time between Milan and Tuscany.
