Italian restauranteurs voted Sassicaia "wine of the 20th century" over the elite of Barlo, Barbaresco and Brunello di Montalcino. Yet the story of the meteroic rise to supremacy of a wine from a grape variety new to Tuscany, grown in a place previously considered unsuitable for quality wines is nothing short of astounding. Sassicaia began to make an impact outside Italy in the early 1970s culminating in 1978 when it triumphed in a "Decanter" magazine blind tasting of Cabernets from around the world, surprising judges who took it for a cru classe Bordeaux. That seems to have marked the moment when people began to believe that Italy counld make great wines of contemporary style. In creating the legend of Sassicaia it might be said that Mario and Nicolo Incisa della Rochetta ushered Italian wine into the modern era. Sassicaia is Italy's most expensive and sought after red wine and is legendary among wine afficianados, with fine vintages fetching hundreds of pounds a bottle. This book tells the story of this extraordinary wine.
