Review

'Generous with telling anecdotes, Leneman is more sparing when it comes to analysis though the judgements she offers are astute.' -- Eighteenth-century Scottish Studies Society, (US), spring 2004

'colourful and entertaining - original research at its best, presented in an engaging and accessible manner.' -- Rosalind Marshall, Scottish Archives, Vol 9, 2003
