London is more a great big jumble than a wild urban jungle. Like the British weather, it has difficulty making up its mind whether it's coming or going: seldom either baking hot or freezing cold, the city is a hotch-potch of subtle differences, an endless anonymous sprawl that can all of a sudden be vivid, distinct and charming, riddled bit by bit with immense diversity and character. First impressions are likely to be decidedly mixed: broadly low-rise, it's far from low-rent. And it does have problems, many of which directly affect visitors: the underground transport is unreliable and over-crowded; too much traffic and too many people regularly clog its polluted streets; decent accommodation can be unaffordable or booked solid; and at the end of every working week many parts of town get hopelessly drunk.
