I have in some ways felt wary in writing this history. I was, at various points, a part of this history, and making decisions about what should or should not be included, in detail, seemed invidious. Nevertheless many of the comics which are included have been incredibly neglected, both at the time that they were produced, and more latterly in the increasing number of histories of the period under consideration. This book, whatever its shortcomings, is an attempt to redress the balance slightly.

It has not been necessary, in the main, to discuss my own minor contributions to underground comics. But for what it is worth what follows is a more personal view of the field. I slaved away as one of the partners in the Junior Print Outfit for years, vaguely believing that adult comics in Britain, if they could not change the world, could at least prove that there should be adult comics in Britain. I, and many others included in this book, largely failed in this aim. Every now and again I made small amounts of money from strips in "alternative" comics like Ally Sloper or Pssst, and occasionally even in more enlightened mainstream titles like the late lamented Oink. Even now, every once in a while I still produce strips, either for my own gratification or in collections like Killer Komix 2 (available from all good bookshops now!). In the meantime — and ever since 1981 — I have at least tried to teach a wide range of degree students that hugely impressive adult comics have always existed, and such things might still thrive in Britain (given a fair chance). Any faults or inaccuracies which remain in the preceding text are entirely my own fault, but hopefully the very fact that this book has been produced is another contribution to improving the stuttering and uncertain status of comics in Britain.
