About the Author:
David Thornton was born in Leeds in 1935, trained as a teacher there and became headmaster of a large secondary school in the city. He is a very well known Leeds historian and has published extensively on the city in the nineteenth century. This book is based on some nine years' research which culminated in the award of a Ph.D. by Leeds University for his thesis on Edward Baines.
