Fair Isle jumpers and beautiful Shetland lace shawls are probably what comes to mind when Shetland knitting is mentioned. In this history, Linda Fryer hopes to give an insight into much more than the distinctive Shetland garment by drawing attention to the social and economic life of these northerly isles. The book is based upon the author's research for her M Litt at the University of Glasgow, and presents the Shetland hand knitting industry in historical detail. She examines such topics as: the hardships endured through the Truck System (a kind of barter) during the 19th century; how the loss of young people through emigration and war has affected the islands and consequently, the knitting; and the changes and developments attributable to modernization in the 50s and the rise of the oil industry in the 70s.
