'It has long been a matter of surprise,' wrote Llewellyn Jewitt in 1873, that for 'a town of such magnitude and importance as Plymouth, no history has as yet been written.' His own account gathered dust for more than a century until republished in this handsome edition. It charts the city's prehistoric origins, occupation by Romans, Saxons and Normans, through its Tudor heyday to Victorian times. Illustrated with delightful engravings, the book also describes Plymouth's churches and other historic buildings.

Llewellyn Jewitt, in the Introduction to his History of Plymouth, on January 1st 1873 wrote:
"It has long been a matter of surprise that [for] a town of such magnitude and importance as Plymouth, no history has as yet been written; and that, beyond the information contained in guide books, which have from time to time been issued, there is literally nothing known publicly of its early history or of the different events which have occurred in connection with it. It is strange, and is indeed a serious reproach to the town, that while almost every other borough in the kingdom P nay, almost every parish and market town P has had its history chronicled and made as imperishable as goodly folio, quarto, or octavo volumes can make it, that of Plymouth should have remained so long unwritten, and consequently, unknown, not only to its own inhabitants, but to the world at large. It has been the aim of the Editor of the present work, so far as in him lies, to remove this reproach from the town, and to produce a history, so far as available information will admit, which shall be worthy of itself, fit to find a place in the library of the topographer and the historian, and make its way into the hands of every inhabitant of the place."
Far from making its way into the hands of every inhabitant of Plymouth, only a few original copies of this magnificent history have survived. For over one hundred years these few have been gathering dust on the shelves of reference-only libraries and private collections. Now, in the year 2001, Jewitt's marvellous history is once again available to the people of Plymouth and their friends the world over.
Beginning in the pre-historic period, the author traces Plymouth's occupation by the Ancient Britons, the Damnonii, the Silures (of Iberian origin and probably brought over by the Phoenicians as tin miners), and the Belgic-Gauls. He records Plymouth's history through the Roman occupation, the dark ages, the Normans, medieval times, the Tudors, the Civil War, Restoration, to Georgian and Victorian England: this fascinating history is an invaluable work both of reference and historical interest.
