Across North America in 2007-2009, communities will celebrate the David Thompson Bicentennials. For 34 years the great explorer, surveyor, and fur trader travelled across the continent, finding and mapping the routes between the St. Lawrence and the Pacific. Trusting the stars and his sextant, he surveyed a continental area so vast it remains a mapping achievement unequalled in human history. This is the story of David Thompsons epic journey his trail by stars.

Across North America in 2007 communities celebrated the David Thompson Bicentennial. Thompson arrived at the Churchill Factory trading post in 1784. He was 14 years old and fresh from the Grey Coat charity school in London. He spent his life in the fur trade, first with the Hudson's Bay Company and then the rival Northwest Company. As an old man, he drew from his extensive field notes and from memory to write the "Narrative" of his 30 years of travels across the continent, mapping the routes between the St. Lawrence and the Pacific. David Thompson's own words guide this retelling of his remarkable life story.
Tom Shardlow's diverse writing ranges from poetry and prizewinning short fiction published in literary magazines to book reviews. His freelance work, which includes creative drawings and photographs, often appears as feature articles in magazines and in newspapers. He lives with his family on Vancouver Island.
