WRITING A COOKBOOK CAN BE FUN Sibyl Publications, a woman-owned Portland press, has a delightful new book out. Food No Matter What! by Laura Szabo-Cohen and Karin Kasdin is not your average cookbook, although the recipes are real enough. It's a spoof and a cookbook and full of stories, helpful information, and well, just plain FUN. Chapter 2 is titled "Call Me Indigestible": what to serve if your partner suffers from acid reflux; the snappy-patter intro segues into some serious healthy recipes. Then there's Chapter 6, "Beach Melba" with sand-friendly recipes for coastal outings (I love the Wilted Slaw with Apples) or chapter 10 "Mean Cuisine," menus for your child's first experience with prejudice; great Jewish, Southern, Hispanic, and Asian recipes. The stories have been written tongue firmly planted in cheek with clever take-offs on gourmet trends and foodie lore. But the recipes offer a wide variety of good eating from solid basics to gourmet treats; for the latter, see especially Chapter 18 ("Saute over Medium Fame: Meals That Will Make You Feel Like You're at the Oscars") or Chapter 20 ("Now that You Flounder, Never Let Her Go: Food as Bait"). There's healthy food in the PMS chapter as well as good recipes to fill care packages for loved ones away at camp, finger foods for women who've just had manicures, ideas for feeding a crowd after a funeral or your family while your kitchen is being remodeled. This book will be a welcome addition to any cookbook collection or a cook's gift for any occasion.
