Review:
If Scotland, as most people seem to agree, needs more trees, then this book is a very good place to start. A well-edited compendium of articles from the Reforesting Scotland Journal, it s an attractively designed and thoroughly researched primer aimed, as Fi Martynoga writes in her introduction, as much at the beginner as it is at those who already engage in planting trees. The first half of the book covers everything from the basics of how to plant a tree through to seed collection, treatment and storage, with a useful section on seed provenance and the law. The second half profiles the trees themselves, and what s especially refreshing is that native and non-native species are given equal weight, acknowledging the important part that trees like the monkey puzzle and often pilloried Sitka spruce have played in the Scottish landscape and Scottish history. --Christopher Stocks, Tree News, Winter 2011-12

All arboreal life is here. Entries on our most common trees and shrubs make this an indispensable companion for any woodland walk. And it's so much more. Each species' ecological contribution is considered; so too are its practical uses and its place in Scottish history and folklore all appealingly illustrated and attractively designed. Yet this is also a manual with a mission, aimed at nothing less than the restoration of Scottish silviculture. Published under the auspices of Reforesting Scotland, it offers advice on seeding, planting, cultivation and larger-scale management. --The Scotsman

If ever there was a book that would inspire the readers about trees and woodlands, then this must surely be one. There are several reasons for this in a market that has seen a plethora of books on trees in the recent years...Whilst there may be many theoretical ideas, the book is essentially about the past and present practical use and planting of trees. Perhaps in keeping with the spirit of the book, how refreshing it was to see it was printed in the UK. The publishers are to be congratulated. --Ray Collier, Highland News
