"The Pokhraj" crystallises the meaning of the soul's experience; it is a story of a person whose life is dominated by the latent memory of a previous love and death, a fascinating tale of mystery, philosophy, and romance. Irina Gajjar combines her Jewish and Hindu backgrounds into rich reading. A yellow sapphire, the "Pokhraj" links the past, the present, and the future through birth and rebirth. This upbeat story of Jewish characters touched by Indian culture suggests possibilities of reincarnation, brings thoughts of life from the moment of conception, and opens windows to the inner workings of the soul. It follows karma as foretold by an Indian fortune-teller, a rich picture of life as we have never imagined it. The clues are all there, but do we know how to understand the signs? "The Pokhraj" works philosophy, romance, and laughter into a mysterious futuristic tale.

About the Author:
Dr. Irina Gajjar was born in Romania, and educated in the U.S. at Bryn Mawr and other fine universities. She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics. Although she was Jewish, she married a very special Hindu. A gypsy fortune-teller told Navin, her husband, that he would meet a foreigner and marry the woman, who would become a famous writer. He did not tell her until after they were married. He encouraged her to pursue her writing and translating, and together they have very successful grown children in America. Irina began to question current philosophical and political ideas; after all, she is familiar with both Jewish and Indian culture, and raised and educated in America. When she presented a paper at the International Association of Near-Death Studies on the Hindu views of the near-death experience, she knew she had to explore the other issues in America today.
