Synopsis

The Farmer's Wife – the story of how a woman retrieves an apple from a hole in the ground – is one of the many Sufi tales for children. For over a thousand years it has entertained young people who join in the chant of this cumulative tale and, at the same time, learn its valuable lessons about the nature of problem solving and discovery. For more than 30 years Idries Shah's collections of Teaching-Stories and narratives from the Sufi tradition have captivated the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. Shah selected the majority of these tales from oral sources. They are repeated in homes, courts and caravanserais throughout the Middle East and Central Asia.

"Enjoy ... new bright collections featuring different illustrators ... fine stories!" -- REVIEWER'S CHOICE, The Children's Bookwatch "Its pleasantly repetitive language makes it an ideal tool for developing reading readiness and beginning reading skills." -- Denise Nessel, Ph.D., National Urban Alliance for Effective Education "These stories ... help in the development of children's cognitive abilities." -- Robert Ornstein, Ph.D.

About the Author

Idries Shah spent much of his life collecting Sufi classical narratives and teaching stories from oral and written sources in the Middle East and Central Asia and publishing them in book form. The eleven tales he wrote especially for children are published by Hoopoe as beautifully illustrated books, all of which have been commended by Western educators and psychologists, the Library of Congress, National Public Radio and other media for their unique ability to foster social-emotional development, thinking skills and perception in children and adults alike. Told for centuries, these stories express universal themes and a positive representation of important but often misunderstood cultures, showing how much we have in common and what we can learn from each other. They acknowledge a child’s individuality and uniqueness and encourage a sense of confidence, responsibility and purpose.
