PAUL R. EHRLICH is Bing Professor of Population Studies, Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University. An expert in the fields of evolution, ecology, taxonomy, and population biology, Professor Ehrlich has written more than 800 scientific articles as well as many books (some coauthored with his wife, Anne) including The Population Bomb, The Machinery of Nature, Extinction, The Population Explosion, Betrayal of Science and Reason, The Dominant Animal and Human Natures. His many scientific honors include membership in the National Academy of Sciences and fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received awards such as the first AAAS/Scientific American Prize for Science in the Service of Humanity as well as the Crafoord Prize in Population Biology and the Conservation of Biological Diversity. Together with his wife, he received many other distinguished prizes including the United Nations Environment Programme Sasakawa Environment Prize.
