About the Author:
Douglas Hall was born in London of Scottish parents in 1926, and educated at University College School. After service in the Intelligence Corps, 1944 to 1948, he studied at the Courtauld Institute, graduating in 1952. He was Deputy Director of Manchester City Art Galleries when he returned to Scotland in 1961 to be Keeper of the newly founded Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, retiring in 1986. He is the author or part author of various monographs on mainly modern painters and since his retirement, works of local history.
