Synopsis:
An Alliance across the Alps explains who the Waldensians are, how they formed a Protestant 'Israel of the Alps' in a tiny enclave and how, with British help, they sought to become an evangelical church for Italy. Unlike other books the emphasis is not on the medieval origins of the Waldensiens, their later adherence to the Reformation or their persecution, about which Milton wrote so fine a sonne!. It concentrates on the special relationship between the Waldensians and British evangelicals in Victorian times, part of the British cultural love affair with Italy and on contemporary witness and service in a dramatically changing Italy. R D Kernohan looks at the Waldensians in the wide context of Italian life and religion, including the progress of Pentecostalism. Among his other themes are the improving but variable ecumenical climate and problems of witness in a Roman Catholic culture. This is topical amidst speculation as to the future direction of the Papacy. Another topical theme is the different reaction to historical events of British and Continental Protestants, from the French Revolution to the barricades of 1958.There are Waldensian partnership societies in England, Scotland, Ireland and the United States. However the book should appeal more widely. It uses original sources and offers new insight into a neglected but significant area of Church history. The story of a troubled but tenacious Christian minority, a minority even amongst the increasing number of Italian Protestants, is also relevant to a situation where we are all minorities in a world of many faiths and much unbellof.
