Thirty-nine sets of brothers have played for New Zealand. The obvious ones like the Brownlies, Meads, Whettons, and Brookes, forwards all, became so dominant that they helped define their respective rugby generations. In tandem they assisted in carrying the All Black banner in the 1920s, 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. In the early years of All Black rugby, combinations of brothers was common. The Milltons were there at the very outset of New Zealand rep play in 1884. The Purdue brothers played together in New Zealand's first official test. The Baylys, Goods, Cookes, McMinns, Fannings, Spencers, Ryans, Tilyards, Badeleys, Shearers, and Donalds were all at the coal-face of early All Black and New Zealand rugby. The 1920s presented the 3-set combinations - the Brownlies and Nicholls - before the Browns, Knights, Hadleys, Solomons, Haigs, Smiths, Goddards, Stuarts, and Meates brothers saw All Black rugby into the modern era.

As Don and Ian Clarke, and Colin and Stan Meads stamped their authority on the '50s and '60s, another set of Clarkes - Adrian and Phil - along with the Goings, Jaffrays, Taylors, Dunns, Woodmans, Whettons, Deans, Coopers, Brookes, Bachops, Gordons and Maugers carried the All Black flag towards and into the professional era. The influence of brothers has been profound in All Black rugby. When the very best All Black combinations have been nominated by experts, sages and enthusiastic amateurs, many of the positions have been filled by members of the All Black 'Brotherhood'. All Black Brothers is a celebration of a unique group of players who have helped chart the development of New Zealand and All Black rugby.
