This is an Australian production (many of the dishes derive from a Melbourne restaurant, the Café; di Stasio) and there is a certain level of facetiousness about the presentation, but there is nothing gimmicky about the recipes--or indeed the singing, which is of the highest order, including Joan Sutherland (home team), Cecilia Bartoli, Pavarotti and the Great Bellower, Mario del Monaco. Among the dozens of recipes a number stand out, though all are interesting: Capellini with lemon, olives and thyme; Orecchiette with lamb sauce; Pumpkin Ravioli (which include crushed Amaretti biscuits); Penne with Vodka. Those tied to the operatic tracks have apparently been selected for appropriateness. It is not always easy to see why. Che Gelida Manina (Your Tiny Hand is Frozen) from La Boheme with Pasta and Chickpea soup? But perhaps it's not so incongruous: since the consumptive dressmaker Mimi, to whom the poet Rodolfo addresses the aria, has just fainted from hunger, what she clearly needs is a good square meal. --Robin Davidson
