'It's very lonely, living a lie.' An early-morning murder in the park of a quiet country town. Two hitch-hiking girls, one of them guilty - one of them a liar. Four years on, Marion still has to know who killed her brother. The police, the press and ordinary people have lost interest in the case. She needs to call on Jefferson Shields - she's been told that he solves puzzles. You'll be baffled to the end of The Souvenir. The Wakefield Crime Classics series revives forgotten or neglected gems of crime and mystery fiction by Australian authors. Many of the writers have established international reputations but are little known in Australia. 'The Wakefield Crime Classics series is marvellous ...a wonderful collection of writing that should not have been overlooked in this country in the first place.' - Terry O'Connor, Courier Mail

Two young Australian girls - quite different in temperament, background, and personality - set out on an innocent hitch-hiking holiday adventure. Peta Squire attempts to take the younger and more inexperienced Sandra Kilby under her wing, but Sandra is appalled to discover that Peta likes taking 'souvenirs' from the travellers who offer rides to the two girls. When Peta steals a pretty pillbox, neither of the girls can know the horrifying consequences of their little game, but the ultimate result is a tragic murder and a stigma that will haunt Peta and Sandra for the rest of their lives.
