Beads represent the oldest form of art. They were the first durable ornaments, coveted by mankind not only for their beauty, but also for their supposed magical and talismanic properties. Made of materials such as shell, bone, seed, wood, metal and glass beads, have been used as units of currency in many parts of the world. This work examines beads in Western and Central Asia from the Eastern Mediterranean to Mesopotamia, Iran and Afghanistan, many items dating from late-Roman to mid-Islamic times.

This is a uniquely beautiful book about ancient beads!
I worked very closely with Ulrich Beck for nearly a year to get this book written. I wrote the descriptive essays and edited the other texts. The book is unique in bead publishing, primarily because of the photography. Instead of the usual documentary-style images of lines of beads, Beck chose Christopher Leggett——and gave him full freedom to be expressive and inventive. The photographs are wonderful and imaginative, and provide great views of some very special beads. The Beck collection is composed of ancient beads from Central and Western, and Southeast Asia, from as early as 500 BCE, through the Islamic Period (with a few modern beads). The majority are of highly artistic glass, but faience, stone, ceramic, and metal beads are included. The text is not exhaustive, but provides a look at the history, use, and techical classification of these objects. We have provided an excellent Glossary of Bead Terms and Types at the back of the book....
James D. Allen is a researcher and lecturer who is co-founder of the Society of Bead Researchers. Sumarah Adhyatman is a well-known ceramicist and a Trustee of the Jakarta National Museum. Christopher Leggett specializes in recording the arts of Asia. Anne Richter researches on Asian decorative arts and lectures at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
