Synopsis

At the dawn of the world, the Old Ones called it Harashil. A thousand years before, Oballef called it the Lady in Gil. Tigrallef calls it the Pain ¿ when he¿s being polite. For more than twenty years he has carried it inside him, a private demon dutifully bent on bringing down the world and everything in it; and while the Pain protects Tig against sickness, danger and the ravages of time, it wages a constant war of attrition against his mind and soul.

With Calla, his daughter Katlefiya and son Vero, and devoted friends Chasco and Shree, Tig has roamed the known and unknown oceans, following a trail which he hopes will lead to the ultimate defeat of the power that lives within him, the power that is coming ever closer to destroying everything he holds dear.

Review

Rebecca Bradley is the author of the lavishly praised Lady in Gil and the sequel Scion's Lady. In this new adventure 20 years have passed, and when Tig and his family finally return to Gil they are immediately arrested. An ancient power, The Pain, has "waged an unending war of attrition upon (Tig's) spirit". This power keeps him from ageing so that The Primate--ruler of Gil--fails to realise who he really is. With part of the family sent into slavery, he narrator Vero trecounts how he and his father meet the resistance, how he falls for the beautiful Mallinna and how they set out on a dangerous voyage to rescue his mother and siblings.

Lady Pain is set against a detailed world evocative of a Renaissance age of exploration but also haunted by an ancient evil reminiscent of stories of HP Lovecraft. The tone however is more swashbuckling romance than horror, for Rebecca Bradley writes with a down-to-earth vigour and dry humour which lends her characters an attractively flawed reality. The relationships are quirkily appealing, with both Vero's frustrations and love for his family making him an engaging hero. The spiritually torn Tig is memorably original, and the lively plot encompasses high seas and mountain adventure, desperate escapes, betrayal and surprising revelations. Closer in spirit to John Whitbourn's Popes and Phantoms than conventional High Fantasy, this is an unusual and well-written novel with a strong emotional undertow. As such it is recommended for anyone looking for a genuinely novel entertainment. --Gary S. Dalkin
