Eric Phipps was British Ambassador to Berlin between October 1933 and April 1937, when he was transferred to Paris. He was appointed nine months after Hitler came to power and was constantly meeting him as well as other German personnel such as von Neurath and Goring. By the time Phipps left Berlin, Hitler was testing his military machine in the Spanish Civil War and setting in train his tactics that would create the conflict of 1939-45. The diary shows Phipps' special brand of diplomacy where he preferred to meet leaders personally rather than use advisers and go-betweens and his descriptions of his time in Berlin are masterpieces of insightful and shrewd comments and observations. The diary is reprinted in full for the first time and the authors adds vital footnotes and an Introduction on Europe in the 1930s and a short biography of Phipps. The volume will become essential reading for those studying World War Two and the build-up to it, the growth of the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler, the diplomatic scene in Europe at the time, and the political debates that were influencing the evolution of modern Europe. The wit and wisdom contained within the diaries add to the general interest and readability of the volume

Review:

'Sir Eric Phipps was an acerbic and astute critic of Nazism between 1933 and 1937. Gaynor Johnson has therefore performed a great service to historians by editing his diary. Our Man in Berlin will be a key source on the period' - Peter Neville, Kingston University, UK

'Gaynor Johnson has done a great service to historians of international relations in editing Eric Phipps' diary. Publication of this fascinating source, illuminating as it does the recesses of British-German relations in the 1930s, is long overdue' - John W. Young, University of Nottingham, UK

'This book will become an indispensable source for anyone studying the origins of the Second World War.' - Erik Goldstein, Boston University
