'Small is beautiful', a much-used cliche, certainly applies to Slovenia, which is only half the size of Switzerland. With a population of only two million, the landscape is still essentially rural. The jagged snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps contrast with fertile valleys, full of colour and activity. This pocket-sized full-colour guide describes car tours and walks not only in the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park, but in many other, less well known but still beautiful parts of the country. Fold-out touring maps, large-scale (1:50,000) topo walking maps. Local transport information. Free on-line update service with specific route change information.

Book Description:

'Small is beautiful' certainly applies to Slovenia, which is only half the size of Switzerland. With a population of just two million, the landscape is still essentially rural. Amongst these industrious people one senses an orderly contentment and a feeling that everything is in tune with nature. Tour Slovenia by car or on foot; the opportunities are endless. This guide covers the entire country except for the very northeast and southeast; however, there is an emphasis on the Julian Alps.

Key features:

· 60 long and short walks

· 25 picnic suggestions, ideal as very short walks

· 1:50,000 topo maps

· 6 car tours

· fold-out touring map showing walk locations – ideal for planning

· larger-scale map of the Julian Alps (1:100,000)

· public transport information

· online update service

The jagged snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps contrast with fertile valleys, full of colour and activity. Porous limestone rock has created the karst landscape; typical features can be seen everywhere and are exciting to explore – from underground rivers emerging as cascading waterfalls to narrow gorges, caves and rock arches. The mountain valleys are immaculate, with strips of vegetables and corn amidst the hayfields and orchards. There are hop-growing areas and beautiful vineyards.

When to walk: Winters are cold and the summers hot. In the mountains snow can fall at any time of the year, and you may find some paths still snow-covered in early June. The warmest months are July and August, when the average temperature is around 23 degrees Celsius, but these are also the busiest times, when accommodation will be at a premium. In May and June, while some of the higher walks may have to be discounted because of snow, the fields and valleys will be a kaleidoscope of colour and activity, and the rivers and waterfalls will be at their best. September and October are also glorious months, when the mountains are usually clear of snow, the trees are ablaze with colour, and the grape and maize harvests are in full swing.

This guide is part of the Landscapes Series, with 50 destinations – dubbed ‘the blue Bibles’ by the Sunday Times and chosen by readers of Which? as one of the four top travel guide series (from a field of 18).

THE guide to Slovenia's beauty. The book was easy to use, providing us with all the detail needed to plan where to go in Slovenia – from simple short walks/drives to more adventurous challenges along more strenuous routes. We had to decide on the trips that we would hope to complete as part of our 2 week holiday. We could not have chosen a better publication to guide us in those choices. The book was simply the best investment which we made in preparation for what was a memorable trip. (GTK, Amazon)

Amazingly accurate. This book was invaluable on our recent holiday to Slovenia. We only did the walks in the area we were staying but they were described in such detail that you couldn't go wrong. (DEG, Amazon)
