Fuerteventura is different from all the other islands in the Canaries. Being the closest to Africa, there's a definite taste of the Sahara about it. The countryside is lonely but warm, bleak but friendly and, in its own way, beautiful. Beaches are what Fuerteventura is all about; mile upon mile of untouched golden sand, great billowing white sand dunes, foaming surf, and quiet turquoise coves.

Even though the landscape changes little, it's pleasant to tour Fuerteventura by car, since there's little traffic. But walking in Fuerteventura is also extremely enjoyable; there are walks to suit all appetites - rambles across the hills, fairly easy mountain ascents, a seaside hike and, for explorers, rocky barrancos with hidden streams and palm groves.

This pocket-sized guide describes car tours, picnic places and walks throughout Fuerteventura. There is a fold-out touring map for motorists, which also highlights the various walking areas. For those without a car, there are timetables for local transport.

The neighbouring island of Lanzarote is just 15 minutes away by fast ferry, so the book also describes a day out on that island, with a car tour and four walks.

3 car tours on Fuerteventura and 1 on Lanzarote (with accompanying touring maps for both islands), 24 long and short walks on Fuerteventura and 4 on Lanzarote (each illustrated with 1:50,000 topo map), 10 picnic suggestions. Plans of Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario, Morro Jable, Caleta de Fuste, Gran Tarajal. Free online update service with specific route change information on the publisher's website, maintained daily.

The 'Landscapes' series, with 50 destinations, has been dubbed 'the blue Bibles' by the Sunday Times and led to Sunflower being one of only four publishers (from a field of 18) chosen as a Which? Recommended Provider of Guidebooks.

We took Noel as our guide. We quickly found that his instructions were clear and his routes excellent. Fuerteventura wasn't the moon with beaches but an island of beautiful valleys, stunning mountain passes and hidden chapels. We came to regard Noel, childishly but fondly, as Know-all, the old-fashioned and decent schoolteacher ever by our side. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say that we grew to love him. --(The Independent)

This book had been recommended by users on the Fuerteventura forum website, and I can see why. Very good guide to seeing Fuerteventura by car or by foot --(KF, Amazon)
