About the Author:

Hein Marais is the former deputy editor of the journal Work in Progress, senior producer of the SABC's flagship current affairs programme, and co-author of Popular Movements and the Struggle for Transformation in South Africa (1995). His writings on politics and develoment have been published widely inside South Africa and internationally. He lives in Johannesburg where he works as a journalist and researcher.
