Synopsis

Donegal became the scene of the last stand up fight between the IRA and British military with the latter using heavy artillery for the first time in Ireland since 1916. Following the outbreak of the Civil War these men were caught up in the hostilities that followed in county Donegal. Four were subsequently executed in the county and were the only executions to take place in the county. Liam Lynch planned the 'Northern Offensive' of the anti-treaty side during the the civil way when many IRA members from the South of the country travelled to Donegal to launch an attack on the newly established government in the the six counties. Michael Collins' free state army was then forced to come up wiith a plan to defend the 'temporary' border imposed by the treaty against these attacks.

Liam O'Duibhir has studied the history of his native county for many years and his first book on the subject: Donegal Awakening, which covered the War of Independence was published successfully in 2009. He studied law and works as a policy officier with a Donegal based youth association.
