Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A superb book, signed and numbered (13/100) by the curators of the exhibition catalogued in its pages, Stephanie Pratt and Joan Carpenter Troccoli. George Gatlin: American Indian Portraits includes 64 plates with consistently fascinating notes, a joint introduction by Pratt and Troccoli then an essay by them each, a chronology of Catlin's life, a map of American Indian localities in 1833, and a three-page double-columned bibliography. The book is very handsomely laid out on lovely, slightly creamy paper. It's in very good condition, with only minor defects such as a tiny spot on the contents page (about 1 by 1.5 millimetres), a little bit of bumping to the bottom outer-edge corners, and - if you angle the boards against the light - some faint external scratches and a shallow graze on the back a few millimetres long. In the book, every page has things of interest. As the curators write, Catlin "went to great pains to show that Native American culture was extraordinarily varied, and that even those tribes who shared a similar way of life on the Great Plains could be distinguished from one another if one took sufficient care to engage with the particularities of their customs. His Indian Gallery displayed diversity, not uniformity; it was not one culture that was on the brink on disappearance but a myriad of different cultures." There are also 25 illustrations in among the introductory pieces and the chronology of Catlin's life, for example there's a handbill advertising a massive display of his work at the Egyptian Hall in London's Piccadilly in 1840. This handbill quotes a review in The Times: "Some of these pictures are exceedingly interesting, and form a vast field for the researches of the antiquary, the naturalist, and the philosopher."
