The garden of Shute in Wiltshire is a seminal landscape garden revealing a unique working relationship between the formidable landscape architect Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe and his client, Michael Tree. Jellicoe was born in 1900 and studied at the Architectural Association. He has worked extensively in England, Italy and the USA creating evocative landscape gardens. He is also co-author of The Landscape of Man and founder member of the Landscape Institute. He was knighted i n 1979 for his services to landscape architecture. This book reveals how, through the relationship of Jellicoe and Tree, many ideas behind his great projects in America were born. The illustrations of 40 of Sir Geoffrey's idiosyncratic drawings for Shute are accompanied by line drawings by the client as well as an exploratory text by Michael Spens. This focus on the garden at Shute provides an insight into the work and philosphy of this influential landscape architect who is still practising today. Beautifully illustrated with drawings by Jellicoe and his client. Investigates an art form that is of increasing international significance today.
