In the course of this struggle however, Antony and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, both of whom are lovers and political allies, find that their forces have been defeated at the battle of Actium and the tragedy then plays out from there... The play is set in Alexandria, under siege by Octavius Caesar.

About the Author:
John Dryden (1631 - 1700) was an influential poet, playwright and literary critic in the Restoration period. His work includes includes plays such as Marriage a la Mode (1672) and All for love (1678), as well as many fine examples of poetry. He was made poet Laureate in 1667.
