Synopsis
Published alongside Steven Daldry's monumental National Theatre production starring Fiona Shaw. Machinal was the winner of four Olivier Awards. Sophie Treadwell's play is an immensely powerful expressionist drama from the 1920s about the dependent status of women in an increasingly mechanised society, based on the true story of Ruth Snyder who was executed in 1928 for the murder of her husband.

Sophie Treadwell was a campaigning journalist in America between the wars. Among her assignments was the sensational murder involving Ruth Snyder, who with her lover, Judd Gray, had murdered her husband and gone to the electric chair. Out of this came MACHINAL, a powerful expressionist drama about the dependent status of women and the living hell of a loveless marriage. Successfully premiered on Broadway in 1928 with Clark Gable as the lover, the play was seen in London two years later, provoked a sensation in Tairov's version in Moscow in 1933, and was then largely forgotten until revivals in New York and London in the 1990s.

Condition: Acceptable. LIGHTNING FAST SHIPPING! A heavily used, but still working copy. Coffee stain and wrinkling to the edge of the pages when a tired undergrad fell asleep and knocked their cup over on their books. The binding and pages of the book have been reinforced with tape, has tape and stickers on the cover, as well as lots of notes (some of the answers in the learning activities may be filled in) on the pages.
