Law for Social Workers provides students with exactly what they need to in order to understand the legal framework in which social workers act. This book covers the laws that restrict, monitor, and mould this position in society, and ultimately govern how social work is carried out. It provides clear information on key issues in social work law, such as the social worker's duties to society and the 'client'; law and the legal system (with detailed help on the issues of discrimination, human rights, and immigration status), plus the workings of the courts; working with children, including in the civil and criminal courts; working with adults; and legal issues relating to violence, family breakdown, and housing. Each section begins with an introduction to the unifying theme that runs through the following chapters. Individual chapters start with a case study based on a recent case or enquiry, highlighting the vital issues that the chapters will explore (for example, an Introductory case study on the Climbie enquiry). Key learning points are set out early in the chapter, and each part contains questions with guidance on the accompanying companion web site.

Review:
Review of previous edition - Law for Social Workers should be on everybody's bookshelf, because it is an indispensable reference book. Annelies Barth, Social Worker, Professional Social Work magazine There is an absolute need for the student and practitioner to have access to a law book of the nature of Brayne & Carr in order to engage with the complexities of a profession which is fundamentally underpinned by statute and public accountability. Chris Penney, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, University of Portsmouth
Synopsis:
This edition gives an up-to-date picture of how the Children's Act 1989 is working in practice. It has been revised to cover the major changes in police station procedures, relevant to juveniles and other vulnerable suspects, the new sentencing powers for the criminal courts and the social security changes for the incapacitated. The book is illustrated throughout with current case law, circulars and regulations. The book is divided into two parts. Part one covers the statutory duties of the social worker, with full coverage of the law relating to child protection, community care, mental health and criminal procedure. How the courts work, how to give evidence and how to write reports are also covered in the first part. Part two deals with areas where social workers may need to advise their clients: solicitors and legal aid, family law, housing, money and discrimination. The book covers all core areas recommended by CCETSW for DipSW course, and does so in a style that makes the law comprehensible.
